((Bored. Takes place many years in the future.))
A Greenwood elder lay in front of a group of curious pups. Their ears were erect, their eyes wide. It was story time in their pack. Up above the full moon shone upon them, spreading light through their forest and territory. The stars twinkled around the moon, blinking coldly at the pups below.
"Let's see...which story will it be tonight?" the elder wondered, speaking more to himself than the pups.
"Tell us about the Blackwood wolves!" a pup said. The younger pups who had never attended a story time such as this shuddered with excitement.
"Very well." the elder said. "Many years ago our Alphess Sunstorm bore a litter of pups. Two of the pups were still born. The only living pup was a she-wolf, who was named Mystic. Many wolves noticed that she didn't resembled her father, Starfrost, at all. This was put aside however." The wolf looked over the pups with his old eyes. His sight was going, but he could see their excited faces clearly. "Mystic grew and was betrothed to a wolf named Avalanche."
"When Mystic was almost two years old, a Blackshadow brute was found on the territory. Mystic was found with him and was injured. Yet she defended him viciously. Blackshadow and Greenwood were at war at this time, so this was very unusual."
The pups who had never heard this story before glanced at each other confusedly. Why would a she-wolf want to help a Blackshadow brute?
"Then the Blackshadow brute, whose name was Romeo or something like that...I don't remember, got into a fight on the border with Mystic's mate. The fight attracted Sunstorm and Starfrost, who sent Romeo back to his territory. Then they called Bleaknight. The Blackshadow Alpha."
All of the pups, younger and older, took in a sharp breath.
The elder smirked. "He is an immortal wolf, like Sunstorm and Donovan. As big as a bear, with glowing red eyes and bloodstained claws. Not even the finest warrior could ever bring him down, I don't think." He cleared his throat. "Continuing on...Bleaknight and Starfrost struck a deal. Bleaknight would banish Romeo and Starfrost would accept him into Greenwood, since he seemed to be of good character and close to Mystic." A few pups glanced at each other. For some reason there had been unusual emphasis on the 'close' part. "And so Mystic broke her engagement to Avalanche and took Romeo as a mate instead."
The pups gasped.
The elder nodded. "They had their first litter of pups, and all three survived. There were two females, named Juliet and Forestheart, and a male named Magic. The pups grew...and both Magic and Forest took Blackshadow wolves as mates."
The pups blinked, noticing a pattern.
"Forest left and joined Blackshadow, where she still lives today." he continued. "Meanwhile Magic's mate Sootflare came to live here. Around this time all three young wolves and their parents accepted the gift of immortality. Sunstorm and a wolf named Donovan also accepted this gift, while Starfrost denied it." A breeze blew through the camp, ruffling their fur. The elder shivered. "Sootflare soon bore pups. One of them was named Songheart, as she looked like her aunt Forest. The other pup was a male and named Malikite."
A shiver spread through all of listening wolves.
"He looked like the Captain of the Guard in Blackshadow, a wolf I'm sure you've heard of. A wolf known as Hemitite." the elder said. "This was when the pack began to notice how little Mystic and her descendants looked like Starfrost and their other ancestors. It wasn't until Mystic's second litter was born, however, did these strange differences became apparent."
A twig snapped in the forest surrounding them. The pups looked anxiously at the dark woods, and the elder laughed. Blushing and feeling foolish, they returned their gaze to their storyteller.
"This litter had seven pups. When they were just barely big enough to leave their mother's den, something terrible happened. Bleaknight, Hemitite, and Bleaknight's Beta Jasper came to the camp. They brought twenty other wolves with them. They killed five of the seven, leaving only two pups known as Starblood and Dandre alive. Hemitite betrayed his pack then, attacking his own brother to help Mystic and get her pups away."
"Why would he do that, Moonfang?" a pup asked.
The elder chuckled. "You will know soon enough. The pack mourned for the lost pups, and turned their attentions to Dandre and Starblood. The pups looked nothing like their parents. Dandre looked like Hemitite and Romeo mixed together, while Starblood resembled Jasper whole-heartedly. The only difference between those two was the fact that Starblood had Mystic's eyes!"
"What if Mystic had gone behind Romeo's back?" a pup suggested.
The elder laughed. "Impossible. They were together always."
"After Starblood died, Donovan was named Alpha. His first act was banishing Mystic and her descendants for being half Blackshadow. He also forced Mystic to admit that Hemitite was her father, not Starfrost. And that Mystic had allowed Hemitite to stay on Greenwood territory." After saying these words, the elder paused to let the pups take this in. Their eyes grew wide and they began to whisper amongst each other. Finally, after accepting this fact, they looked back to the elder.
"So, pups and all, Mystic and her kin left." the elder continued. "They settled in a forgotten piece of Blackshadow territory where the woods forest grew thick and the entire territory was shrouded in shadow. They named themselves the Blackwood pack."
Each pup knew where the story went from there. The Blackwood border briefly touched the Greenwood border, but it mostly shared its boundaries with Blackshadow and Bluesky.
"Now they live on, each immortal." the elder continued. "Many say that living in the shadows have darkened their hearts, and they've gained the power of invisibility. No Blackwood wolf can be seen unless they wish to be." The pups whimpered in fright and automatically began to look around. The elder laughed again. "It's also said they have a taste for pups. And all naughty pups are sent off to the border to be snatched up by the evil invisible wolves!"
The pups let out squeals of fright at this. The other wolves sitting nearby chuckled and provided comforting words for the frightened little ones.
Out in the woods, two other wolves were chuckling softly. They hid in the dark shadows, and only their outlines could be seen in the bright moonlight. One of the wolves, a young male with a blood red pelt, shifted slightly so that his companion could have a better idea as to his location. "Invisibility now? Dandre, why didn't you tell me we had this gift?"
His brother and companion stepped into the moonlight as well. His pelt was a sleek green color, like the leaves on the trees themselves. "What stories they come up with now!"
The red wolf turned and began to head back, darting through the shadows. It was the skill his pack was now known for. Disappearing into thin air. "The last time I came with Juliet they said that the two of us died on the journey to the new territory and haunted the Greenwood lands."
The green wolf chuckled as he flitted as well, darting from shadow to shadow as silently as his brother. "Ah, story time here is almost as interesting as when Sol and Forest come to visit."
"I just wish the two would stop having pups. The last litter had eight! And the litter before that had five, and this new one has NINE." the red one said. His brother chuckled and nodded in agreement, just a faint outline of movement in the shadows. And, once again, the two left their old territory behind and returned to the familiar shadowy forests they called home.
